Important Benefit News
Effective Monday, Feb. 2, employees participating in the UNC System sponsored mandatory retirement plan (e.g., the Optional Retirement Plan) or any of the UNC sponsored supplemental plans (e.g., UNC 403(b) or UNC 457(b) plans), will see slight changes in the underlying asset allocation targets for the UNC Target Date Models.
2026 ID Card Error: Some Aetna State Health Plan ID Cards for 2026 display an incorrect effective date of Jan. 1, 2025. Aetna is aware of the issue, and advises users to use the card as usual. There should not be a disruption in service due to this error.
Submitting forms for the UNC System 403(b) Plan salary reduction or 457(b) Plan salary deferral elections will soon transition to the Empyrean platform — paper form submissions will not be permitted after Wednesday, Jan. 21. A blackout date will occur from that date until Saturday, Feb. 28, for the transition.

Student workers:
- Hired and reported as part-time variable hour
- Hours are not to exceed:
- 29 hours per week for undergraduate students (domestic and permanent residents)
- 25 hours per week for graduate students (domestic and permanent residents) — Up to 20 hours can be on Graduate Assistantships
- 20 hours per week for international students
- If averaging full-time (30+ hours per week) over measurement periods, offered the High Deductible Health Plan
Temporary faculty (FTE calculated – 3 work hours for every credit hour):
- FTE .75+ (cumulative of all jobs) or measured full-time, offered the High Deductible Health Insurance
Temporary hourly workers (eligibility based on FTE, regardless of duration of appointment)
- FTE .75+ (cumulative of all jobs) or measured full-time, offered the High Deductible Health Insurance
Temporary salaried workers (regardless of the FTE)
- Reported as full-time & offered the High Deductible Health Insurance
