There are times when an employee needs to be absent from work for a prolonged period of time due to a medical condition. The Voluntary Shared Leave Program provides the opportunity to donate leave to employees approved to receive leave because of a medical condition of the employee or member of their immediate family, that will require the employee's absence for a prolonged period of time, resulting in a possible loss of income due to accumulated leave. More information is available here

As a general rule, vacation and sick leave should only be taken after the leave has been earned. However, if warranted by individual circumstances, there is some flexibility, subject to approval by appointed authority, to accommodate advance leave requests when an employee does not have vacation, sick or bonus leave or compensatory time to cover their time off request.  More information is available PIM 03: Advance Leave.

State employees receiving temporary total disability compensation due to a work-related injury may supplement this benefit pursuant to the OSHR Workers’ Compensation policy. After the employee is placed on workers’ compensation leave, the weekly benefit may be supplemented by the use of partial sick or vacation/bonus leave, earned prior to the injury, in accordance with a schedule published annually by the Office of State Human Resources. Read more about this benefit.
