Community Service Leave
In recognition of the State’s diverse needs for volunteers to support schools, communities, citizens and non-profit organizations while recognizing the commitment of University employees to engage in volunteer service, UNC Charlotte offers eligible employees paid community service leave each year.
Leave Overview
- Hours cannot be carried over from year to year.
- There is no payout for unused hours if an employee separates from the University.
- All employees must get approval from their supervisors to use community service leave.
- All types of CSL is credited to each eligible employee on Jan. 1 of each year.
- Newly hired employees are credited with leave upon their employment, prorated at two hours per month for the remainder of the calendar year.
Eligible Employees
Full-time permanent, probationary and time-limited SHRA, EHRA Non-Faculty, and EHRA 12-Month Faculty employees are eligible for leave. Part-time (half-time or more permanent, probationary and time-limited employees are eligible for leave at a prorated amount. Temporary and part-time (less than half-time), are not eligible.

Using Community Service Leave
Employees must enter their community service leave requests in Kronos WFR. When requesting the leave, you are required to include the following information in the comment section:
- Name of the school or organization and indication if it is a 501(c)3 agency or eligible human service organization
- Type of service/participation (i.e. meeting with your child’s teacher, servicing food at the soup kitchen)
- Example: I volunteered with UNC Charlotte during the campus-wide service event. I helped assemble care packages for four local community partners.
Employees must provide supporting documentation to their supervisor if requested. Supervisors should review and approve/deny requests based on the information provided and University Policy, consulting with the Benefits Office as needed.
