SHRA-to-EHRA Conversion
The North Carolina General Assembly and UNC System Office have expanded eligibility criteria for EHRA designation to include SHRA positions classified as non‑exempt under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. Previously, EHRA eligibility was limited to IT; audit, business and finance; law enforcement; and FLSA‑exempt staff, with the University offering SHRA‑to‑EHRA conversion opportunities to eligible employees over the past several years.
The next phase of SHRA‑to‑EHRA conversion will take place in October and November. Eligible SHRA exempt employees who have not yet been offered a conversion, along with all eligible SHRA non‑exempt employees — except those in building environmental services and skilled trades — are included in this initiative. Eligible employees may choose to convert to EHRA designation or retain their current SHRA status.
Informational packets — including conversion and personal leave election forms, FAQs and a SHRA/EHRA comparison sheet — will be emailed to all eligible employees and their supervisors on Friday, Oct. 2. The packet will include instructions, Q&A session schedules and conversion decision timelines.
